Shorts by Hispanic Filmmakers to air on Cine Sony

Recently, Cine Sony and NALIP (hte National Association of Latino Independent Producers) conducted the contest Voces Nuevas where they awarded new Latino filmmakers and their shorts with the prize of new resources to create new content.

Now, starting on October 13, the winning shorts will have the chance to be viewed across the country on Cine Sony. The first episode will air the winner of the whole contest, La Capa Azul which is a story about the devastation of Hurricane Maria on the directors’ native country of Puerto Rico, as well as To Infinity and Uno Por Uno: The Cuban Missile Crisis.

Many more shorts will air in groups of two and three every month during the rest of 2019 and the beginning of 2020. Here is a summary of the first four episodes:

LA CAPA AZUL (2018)

Directed by: ALEJANDRA LÓPEZ (Puerto Rico)

Synopsis: Two months after Hurricane Maria landed on the shores of Puerto Rico, the power remains out and the infrastructure continues to collapse. Junior, a ten-year-old boy, is summoned by his mother to search for the medicine his grandfather so desperately needs. He puts on a blue cape, made of the tarp that covers his roof, to overcome the obstacles in his journey and save his grandfather’s life.

TO INFINITY  (2017)

DIRECTED BY: GABRIEL SAVODIVKER

Synopsis: A dying father helps his young daughter carry an imaginary mission into space in order to reunite her with her mother; which leads to an unimaginable revelation.

UNO POR UNO: THE CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS (2018)

DIRECTED BY: EDDIE MUJICA

Synopsis: Uno Por Uno is a mockumentary series about fictional Latinx stories presented by visionary filmmaker Joaquin Del Cine. The Cuban Missile Crisis is the story of Yuskobe Rodriguez, a Cuban immigrant whose ability to knock down long-range shots forms an unlikely bond that transcends a pickup basketball game.

MARADENTRO  (2018) – DIRECTED BY: CHRISTA BOARINI

Synopsis: A fantastic discovery gets out of hand when artisanal fisherman Nacho and his young nephew Pato accidentally catch a childlike mermaid in their net. Unsure whether to help her, sell her, or release her back into the ocean, the two of them, along with Pato’s overprotective mother Magda, must decide what to do when a bit of magic invades their world.

SWIM (2017) – DIRECTED BY: VERNER MALDONADO

Synopsis: A young swimming prodigy tries out for the nation’s top swim team, where he’s pushed towards greatness by a militant coach.

EPISODE 4 – Premiere date TBD

THE LAST LIGHT (2017) – DIRECTED BY: ANGELITA MENDOZA

Synopsis: Izabella, a young girl, finds a little boy tied up in an abandoned house on her family’s land as the local farmers are frantically searching for her cousin, KATY, who has gone missing.  Izabella questions the boy to find out who he is and why he’s been left there. Is he being mistreated, or has he done something wrong? It’s a race against time as the family & farmers try to find out what happened to young Katy before it’s too late.

MIDNIGHTS (2018) – DIRECTED BY: ALVARO DONADO 

Synopsis: In the aftermath of a violent midnight street crime, a female trainee police officer on midnight shift suspects a collateral victim is missing.
