Linda Movie Review: THEN CAME YOU
Then Came You review by Linda Ruiz
THEN CAME YOU is an interesting film that changes the formula of the cancer –stricken teen genre to tell the story of Skye (Maisie Williams), a force of nature who befriends Calvin (Asa Butterfield), a 19-year old hypochondriac who is afraid to live. They meet when Calvin attends the cancer support group that Skye belongs to. She immediately zeros in on Calvin and just crashes her way in to his life. Unwilling at first to befriend her, Skye eventually wins him over and enlists his help so she can complete her ‘to die” list.
The to die list includes all the wonderful, zany and get in trouble moments a teen would experience on their way to adulthood. Trouble comes when they are arrested by Officer Al (Ken Jeong) but he recognizes them from the support group and immediately becomes a member of the to die list crew.
As Calvin and Skye grow closer she discovers that he is suffering from survivors’ guilt which is the cause of his hypochondria. Her to die list shifts to helping Calvin deal with that past tragedy by focusing on his opportunity to find love with Izzy (Nina Dobrev). Not an easy task since Skye doesn’t have much time.
Maisie Williams shines as Skye in her first starring role. Her performance is touching and real which makes THEN CAME YOU a “to die “film unlike any other.
THEN CAME YOU opens tomorrow February 1. Make it a family event and see what living is all about.
