Javier Botet…The Monster.

Do you recognize this monster?

Javier Botet-Scary Stories to tell in the Dark

For the past 15 years Javier Botet has been the monster of our nightmares. Currently he is The Big Toe Corpse in Scary Stories to tell in the Dark, available now in VOD and DVD from Lionsgate. In my interview with him, Javier states that ” every film was a different experience. The monstrous character is different and the creative process behind it is a collaboration where something magical happens.”

So when producer and screenwriter Guillermo del Toro called Javier to collaborate on some magic, Javier made himself available to be “the canvas” and help bring The Big Toe Corpse to life. Del Toro is like family so it didn’t matter to Javier that he would be working on 3 different movies on 3 different sets!. It was a joy for him to walk from set to set, than get on an airplane( not a big fan) at various times.

Javier is an artist in his own right. He has written produced and directed 4 of his 5 short stories, as well as editing them. Javier created the story boards and chose to be the monster or create it on another actor based on the techniques he has been a part of and learned from.

He is in his element in this creative world and doesn’t feel like he’s being boxed in or pigeonholed. ” I get to express this creativity through the collaboration with others and through my own projects. ” The creation of a new monster is a fantastic experience. It’s a different world for every movie.” Javier feels blessed he is doing what he truly loves.

At the time of this interview he was still filming Them: Covenant for Amazon Prime (one of the 3, as well as IT Chapter 2), so be on the lookout for the monster of our nightmares. Photos courtesy of Alberto Morago ”
