Review By Jesus Figueroa

Based on hit AMC show “The Walking Dead” comes a video game which allows a player to dive in to a prequel adventure in “The Walking Dead Survival Instinct” on all major video game counsels. Through stealth or brute force the player maneuvers as Daryl through the walker infested world on their way to Atlanta. Making decisions of which survivors to save and which to let be as well as who goes out on missions and who stays in the safe house.

Rumor has it that the story behind Daryl’s crossbow gets revealed through the game play.

Late 2012 fans saw trailers for the game with much to be desired. But with lack of enthusiasm from fans of the show Principal effects artist Glenn Gamble said the trailer featured old footage and video games evolve through out the creation process. The first real look at the game has been revealed and still shows a very rough game that visually does not match games to date. Only a strong storyline can make up for the lacking graphics. The game follows Daryl and Merle Dixon who will be voiced by the shows Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker.

Just how much will be revealed through the storyline of the game?

“The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct” has a release date of March 29, 2013. For all those Walking Dead fans looking forward to this game I’m sure will enjoy it.

Review By Jesus Figueroa

This game has the feel of a retro game with amazing graphics. There are many Mario games out there but this one combines the great and easy gameplay with incredible graphics and amazingly cool multiplayer possibilities.

The story is the same one as always. Bowser has captured Princess Peach and Mario has to travel through the many different lands defeating Bowsers goompas and each lands specific Bowser minions. The first stage introduces the first of what seems to be three baby Yoshis, a pink baby Yoshi that floats, a yellow baby Yoshi that lights up the darkness for a period if time, and a blue Yoshi which I have not gotten to play with. There’s also mini games which give items and 1up mushrooms. Each land has a tower with a lesser minion and a few stages to get through.

The gameplay I found entertaining and really fun. It is able to be played on the television screen or on the Gamepad. There is not much different from every other Mario game. Then came the multiplayer mode. As many as five players can play on a single system. Four players can play as characters on the television screen and one can help them out playing on the Gamepad by helping them reach new heights, help players move across large gaps easier, and discover hidden items. It’s a great competition during multiplayer mode as well as co-op play. Aside from those modes there’s mini-games and time trials to beat.

The Miiverse socializing is utilized extremely well allowing for players to post as much or as little as they would like. Being able to comment on levels after succeeding to pass them is a great feature. Best of all, it’s customizable who gets to see those post, from everyone to just friends. Post appear on the game as progress is made and it can help on passing a level or even give other players a heads up on the difficulty of it.

I score this game a 4 out of 5 Popcorns. Although gameplay and use of the Gamepad are amazingly cool the feel of the game does not quite reach the next generation game counsel. It’s fun, it’s entertaining, and in some degree it’s challenging but something is lacking. I am still on the third land and I have much more to explore.

There will be an update once I get to play more and the rating may go up or down depending on how the game progresses or if it doesn’t.

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – -

(Update 12/27)

So after a week of playing on and off between 3 games I have gotten to pass Bowser. I found myself over joyed to finally get through some of these difficult yet enjoyable levels. Although many who posted on the Miiverse cursed the the living daylights out of many of out if Bowser. I passed the game with 92 lives. It is difficult on certain levels especially approaching Bowser. The fun aspect of playing Mario is never lost. Best part of defeating Bowser is that it unlocks 2 bonus worlds. Star World and a secret island. There’s also the 238 star coins to collect through out the levels. The replay value of this game is one that will have a gamer wanting to complete the game at 100% completion. Some coins are difficult to find, some are out in the open but they all need to be located. Then there’s the secret exits, with secret levels which also contain star coins. (Guessing there’s one more update once I’m at 100% in this game 203 star coins 35 more to go and secret island and star world still left.)

This game is at a 4.5 out of 5 Popcorn’s. With all that needs to be done to complete this game and the hours of enjoyment it can possibly get to a perfect score. The difficulty makes it exciting, like all Mario games its fun, and its challenging. Lets hope it keeps it up until the final stage.

Review By Jesus Figueroa

Just got a few Wii U games so am going to do some vids for the more exciting ones and maybe the fun ones to play.

Right off the bat when Assassin’s Creed 3 was clicked on there’s an update before being able to play. Downloading lasted about 5 minutes and installation about a minute. So I finally got to game the play. After an opening scene to show off the improved image quality for the Wii U. It’s pretty impressive, nice leap into HD for Nintendo. So finally get into playing the beginning of the game and going through the basic controls through the tutorial. It’s quick and painless while it “creates the world.” These controls are basic and the same as any other system. I feel that they lack use of the gamepad. It feels just like another system.

Ok, so gameplay is a bit confusing after getting through the tutorial. Everything is basically done for you. There’s no need for a jump button because once an edge is reached if jumping is needed it automatically does it and if it’s not then no jumping. I played all through the first scenario of the game. Shooting is pretty interesting having it feel like it automatically clicks on to the closest target. You can however control a longer distance shooting by holding down Rb. Walking around is extremely slow so I guess it’s a good thing that the character never seems to get tired while running. Although that function is not allowed always. Once again going through mostly the whole first scenario and starting off the second there has been no use of the gamepad screen other than to show a very frustrating map. It has so many things on it and no legend to know what any of it means. To see the legend turn on/off icons you need to pause the game. That kind of defeats the purpose of having two screens to play on.

I give this a 2 out of 5 Popcorns. Although graphics are much better there is nothing about this version of the game from the Xbox 360 or PS 3 versions. It feels a bit rushed to come out as a release game. Maybe I’ll update this if after more than an hour of gameplay the game improves or if it gets any lamer.

Well checked out the 3 Demos that the Nintendo e-shop had to offer.

First up was the upcoming “Rayman Legends” demo.

The first level of play was half Rayman who fights, glides, and rescues these little blue creatures. Then the second part was a Gamepad playable section. Ok the Rayman game felt like any other Rayman game but once I got to this my opinion changed. Tapping on creatures, moving the Gamepad around, an interacting with the environment was so cool. Being able to affect the onscreen progress from what I did on the Gamepad was just amazing to me. The second level was a wind level where the regular where it just showed off amazing graphics. It felt like playing just a regular game. I was able to play it fairly easily the “bulky” Gamepad was hardly uncomfortable. Then came a third and final demo level that had a very creative gameplay as I ran through the level. The music kept me entertained, the obstacles we well manageable and it sold me to looking into this game a bit more.

Sonic & All-stars Racing Transformed

There was so much this game could have been. The graphics are awesome for a sonic game. The gameplay could have been so much more. With the size of the Gamepad it could have been good to use it as a steering wheel much like the Mario Kart attachment for the Wii was.

This is just the demo but it really gives me no urge to go out and buy the entire game.

FIFA ’13

I am a soccer fan so I was looking forward to this demo. I had seen the video with the instant on Gamepad coaching functions and I wanted to experience it for myself. It did not disappoint. The graphics are awesome both on the main screen and on the Gamepad are good. The Gamepad directed shot is awesome but can be a bit tricky to get use to but if all else fails there are the classic controls you can rely on. The movement is very fluid and allows for a non stop playing experience. No more having to pause the game to change things. This demo did a great job of showing the tutorial and showing the amazing use if the Gamepad screen.

So far the demos I have tried have been awesome. Rayman Legends I will look into getting and giving a full review and maybe some video of the gameplay. Sonic & All-stars Racing Transformed I may get if it ever comes to $20. FIFA ’13 really got my attention and will definitely get as soon as I can. I will review and send both TV and Gamepad shots as well as some video of gameplay.

Review By Jesus Figueroa

There’s nothing better than a new system that provides a wow moment from the moment you open the box such as the Wii did years ago and the Wii U does today. I just set up my Wii U and played around with the already installed apps on the Wii Menu. Which there really isn’t much more than creating Miis, Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, Hulu+, Internet app, and Nintendo’s E-Shop.

Creating a Mii is fun. I of course tried the creating from scratch part which is just as fun as the Wii. With all those options to choose from how can it not be. But, what I got more interested in was letting it create my Mii through “Create from Photo.” It’s easy you just choose eye color, hair style and hair color and snap a picture. After a few seconds it pops out with a Mii that resembles the picture. It is possible to modify after it generates the Mii.

Didn’t try Hulu+ because I don’t have an account. Amazon Instant video: Set up is fairly easy. Just registering a new device on your Amazon account. It works great and fast. (This means more DVD reviews for iwatchmike.com) Netflix: still simple and easy. Registering is fast and searches are quick and with the Gamepad so much easier to navigate through. On-screen keyboard is very responsive and comfortable to use. The biggest thing I am looking forward to is TVii. But still no set date of release. The Internet app is easy to use. And is just what it sounds like, it’s an app to go on the Internet. The display on the TV and on the Gamepad are both great. I prefer the Gamepad since I’m use to doing everything on my iPhone anyways. Nintendo’s E-Shop is okay at the moment. Not much to explore in there. I would have expected the fact that your not getting a disc to reduce the price of games but no. Guess there’s no real incentive to buying at the E-Shop although I’m sure there will be some download only games. Searching through the E-Shop is easy and there are more than just games. There are videos and promos from Nintendo explaining about upcoming games.

Even before setting it up, when I opened the box I was in awe over the controller. Having a chic style apart from that of the Wii, the system itself is not bulky and fits well into an entertainment system. The new Gamepad is big but I couldn’t wait to set it up and see its functionality. It just looks exciting to handle. I bought the basic set so it does not come with stands and “Nintendo Land” but I will be reviewing “SiNG PARTY” at a later date.

What I found to be just perfect was that this High-Definition system actually comes with an HDMI cable. If a system is meant to be HD then yes it should come with the cable. The update is time consuming after plugging everything in. The Gamepad can also control your TV. It’s the easiest to set up. All that needs to be done is inputting the brand of the set and it does all the rest.

So how would I rate the Nintendo Wii U as of now. I say it’s a 3.5 out of 5 Circuits. It’s chic, the Gamepad is revolutionary, and it comes with every cable it needs to function at its best right out of the box. The counsel even if it just matches the resolution if the other counsels out there it still has a player interaction no other system can compare to. $300 for the basic set, 8gbs of internal memory and comes in white, and the Deluxe set, which comes with 32gbs of internal memory, comes in black, “Nintendo Land” game, and stands for the Gamepad and counsel.

(Game Reviews Coming soon to www.iwatchmike.com)

Review By Jesus Figueroa

There is no game over in INDIE GAME THE MOVIE when developers struggle to produce the best video game they can with the least amount of people they can. It’s very easy to forget that video games like GTA are produced by thousands of people over 3-5 years. This film shows how the indie games that have so dominantly taken over the online markets if the gaming systems get made. Taking 3 video game creators and showing the troublesome journey they go through and are still going trough to produce games they would be proud to put out there. From concept to release, for some, this film follows the gruesome life that these game enthusiast go through. Having sometimes only two people working on writing, fixing and revising a game has game designers scrambling to produce something that will sell. Primarily having the enthusiasm of being avid gamer’s and loving video games, the creators of “Super Meat Boy”, “Fez”, and “Braid”, are determined to get their games made.

They each have different levels of experience and encounter different problems. The main problem they face is being only a few people working on bringing a game to a major gaming counsel. The ideas are there but making them reality ends up being a long arduous journey, taking as little as three years to release to the public. Not only wanting to have a game that the public will like they also want to release a game they are proud to put their name behind. There is success, there is happiness, there is turmoil, and there is struggle. Some end up happy with the outcome, some still haven’t finished, and some are less than happy. The approach is all in for every one of these creators and they all risk it all. They hold such passion and believe in their idea that they lay it all on the line. The ending comes after a long process and is well received.

Unless your a huge fan of video games, or developing video games, or of die hard struggles you may want to avoid this film. It has no glitz and glamour although it does carry much story and suspense. It’s about an hour and a half and it can drag on a bit.

I give this 3 out of 5 Popcorns.
